Analysis of student film: 'INSANITY'

Genre
The genre of this piece is horror. This is because of the intense feeling of the piece, as well as the sinister character towards the end of the opening. This is highlighted by the sound, mise-en scene as well as the lighting of the piece.
Editing
The editing of this piece is done rather well. It is slow, highlighting the confusion of the character as well as the stereotypical idea that males are seen as calmer and more laid back, therefore requiring slower paced editing. However, at one point, the character is seen walking towards the cathedral. A close up of his face is used. During this close up, he is suddenly standing standing still. This shows that the clip is discontinuous, and could confuse the audience significantly.
Sound
Throughout this piece, both non-diegetic and diegetic sound is used to highlight the suspense of this piece. The non-diegetic music is intense, scary and askew. This represents the fact that the character is in unfamiliar surroundings, as well as the idea that something sinister is afoot. Diegetic sounds is used effectively, whereby the character is heard treading on leaves as he walks down the hill at the beginning of the piece. Broken leaves are a signifiers of autumn, or low key seasons - popular for the horror genre.
Mise-en Scene
The mise-en scene in this piece is considered very well, and is one of the very positive aspects of this opening. The lighting of the piece is low key, stereotypical for the horror genre. The location of the opening is very well thought, as the cathedral is a key convention of horror, as is a forest. The combination of these two locations has a good impact on the piece. However, the clothing of the character in this piece could be improved. It is very bright, and colloquial. This juxtaposes the stereotype of horror significantly, and would impact the film more if he was wearing clothes that are popular within the genre.
Titles
Titles are used throughout this piece, however not particularly well. They are very similar to the tone of the video, making them reasonably hard to read. They are also reasonably infrequent. The final title, however, is effective. It is a suitable font to the genre and the narrative of the piece. The idea of it jittering and nudging is effective, as it connotes uneasiness, as well as confusion.
