Research Into Mainstream and Independent Institutional Logos

I have conducted research into institutional logos, both mainstream and independent. I will list the differences between them, and why. I will also list the reasons these logos are effective to both the status of the company and the quality of the institution, as seen by the consumers of the texts. I have used Universal Studios as my mainstream institution, and the Irish Film Institute as my independent institution.

Firstly, the main difference between these two logos is the detail. Universal are a large mainstream institution, and therefore have more money to spend on such things. This is shown above, there the text is 3-Dimensional, and highly precisive. The background of the text is of planet earth, making it effective as it is suggesting that the institution delivers its product worldwide, or universally.
The IFI institution logo is much simpler than that of the Universal. It is purely black and white, and has a simple shape behind the letters. This is effective as it is simple, and is less costly to design. This is good because an institution such as this will have less funding than a mainstream institutions such as Universal, Disney or Times Warner.
The second difference between the two logos is the use of colour. Despite uiversal having a colourless logo for their plain needs, the primary logo that we as an audience are very familiar with is the blue, white and gold logo. The IFI is plain black with white text, which is then contrasted in the shape with the 3 letters being reversed coloured. This IFI logo is effective as it allows the logo to be printed or placed on any poster or advert without the colours being distorted. This is also effective when the document is plain or black and white, as the identity of the logo will not be differed in any way.
